When you think of black pepper, your first thought is probably of a small shaker on the kitchen table next to the salt. But that is just one form of Black pepper (Piper nigrum). There is actually a little known essential oil made from this well known, vine-grown fruit. Black pepper essential oil is loaded with amazing health benefits. It blends well with basil, bergamot, cypress, frankincense, geranium, citrus oils, palmarosa, sandalwood and ylang ylang, to name a few. (Purchon & Cantele, pg. 40, Althea Press, 286)
Black pepper may also be a contributor to muscle, tissue, and joint health, helping with issues such as stiff muscles, muscle aches, sprains and strains, poor muscle tone, rheumatism and arthritis.
“Black pepper oil is one of the important oils for treating muscular problems. When applied to the skin, it dilates blood vessels and produces localized redness and warmth, which relieves aching, tired muscles. Used in a massage oil prior to intense activity (particularly by runners and dancers), it can reduce strain on muscles by increasing the blood flow to a specific area. In small amounts in bath and massage blends, it may be used to ease arthritis, rheumatism, muscular aches and pains, sprains, strains, poor muscle tone, muscular stiffness, neuralgia, chilblains and poor circulation. It eases pain by numbing nerves.” - Purchon and Cantele, pg. 41
It may also stimulate the nervous and circulatory systems, as well as positively affecting diabetes and hypertension (according to the journal of Advances of Pharmacological Sciences). Studies have also shown that Black Pepper significantly reduced cravings for cigarettes in certain test groups, according to a study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
So basically, it does a lot more than just spice up your food. ;-) Here's a great summary for Black Pepper essential oil:
"Its ability to increase stamina and alternesss, paired with its value as a natural painkiller adn circulatory system stimulant make it a valuable essential oil to add to your medicine chest." -Althea Press, p. 286
